A NIGHTMARE OF ELM STREET 3 : THE DREAM WARRIORS

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 is really something else. The original Nightmare was a classic film, no questions there. I liked the second one, though some people didn’t. This installment, “The Dream Warriors” takes the series further into dream / fantasy territory and not only manages to keep the franchise fresh and interesting, it really lifts the bar for horror effects and CGI for the genre.

This installment sees the return of Heather Langenkamp as Nancy. The original heroine of the series. She is now a few years older and works as a therapist. She is called in to a mental hospital to try out a revolutionary dream therapy to stop the group delusions of a child killer that the teenage inmates within share. Kristen played by a young Patricia Arquette is the last of the children of parents who were responsible for killing Freddy Krueger. Kirsten, alongside the other kids in the home are plagued by nightmares of Freddy.

In a group hypnosis session Nancy enters a shared reality dreamscape with the teenagers and discovers Freddy Krueger is indeed back on the revenge trail. He is looking to kill Kirsten and the other teenagers. Can Kirsten, Nancy and the other teenagers stop the nightmare killer from picking them off one by one? Well obviously I can’t tell you that, you’ll have to see the film for yourself!

THE VERDICT ON A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3

Overall this is a really cool film. There’s not much I can fault this on. Robert Englund does his usual excellent job as Freddy Krueger. The horror effects are great fun and really original for the time they were done in. For the time i think this wouldn’t have been too extreme and should be right for most younger teen horror fans to watch. I’d recommend you watch the first two films in sequence before you watch this for the full effect, but this one does stand up on its own. Enough background is given for the viewer to jump right in if need be. THere’s also a neat 80’s heavy rock soundtrack backing this one featuring Dokken!
