HOLLOW MAN

Time for another flick and this time it was Hollow Man starring Kevin Bacon (Friday 13th) and Elizabth Shue (Karate Kid) and directed by Paul Verhoeven (Robocop, Starship Troopers) you know this is going to be at least alright but hopefully really good.

THE PLOT

Bacon stars as Sebastian, an eccentric but genius research scientist who has made a huge step forward in his research and managed to create an invisibility serum that can turn the animal subjects he’s experimenting on invisible.

The research raises a lot of ethical issues and on presentation to the US military Sebastian tells them that while the invisibility serum works, he hasn’t yet solidified a way to bring them back from their state of invisibility. To continue the experiment Sebastian suggests they start human testing and volunteers himself as the first subject.

The procedure works as Sebastian had planned and after the experiment Sebastian is now invisible. Only able to be seen when he’s wearing clothes or make up. Sebastian assumes the serum will wear off in a few days but unfortunately for him it doesn’t. After a raft of tests and analysis, Sebastian gets sick of being confined to the lab and wanders off. After repeated warnings to stay in the lab the other researchers decide to come clean to the defence project co-rodinators about whats been happening with Sebastian. Sebastian of course doesn’t dig this and starts “silencing” anyone that disagrees with what he’s doing. Can the researchers keep Sebastian under control and more importantly survive? Well I guess you’ll have to watch the movie to find out!

THE VERDICT

The visual effects in this won awards, I There are some visually awesome moments in this but I feel like there are better movies visually speaking than this one. It can be hard in 2024 to put your mind back into 2000 for proper context, but I don’t think the effects were anything genre leading special even for the time. I think the movie itself is great and the plot is quite captivating so it’s not a huge issue. Overall, I really enjoyed Hollow Man but don’t think it’s in the same league as Robocop or Starship Troopers, but definitely a decent watch.
