What Makes a Great Horror Movie?

This can be a tricky question. What works in one movie may not work in another. Some movies rely on gore, others on a great story line others again on special effects, atmosphere and humour. Horror movies can excel in some aspects and completely fall over in others. Some movies may have all aspects and some might only focus on one aspect of horror. It’s really an individual, case by case basis type thing. but having said that here a few of the more common traits that make a movie stand out from the crowd in terms of horror:

1. Compelling Storyline

At the heart of every successful horror film lies a gripping story. The narrative should evoke suspense, build tension, and ultimately deliver a chilling payoff. From supernatural hauntings to psychological thrillers, a well-crafted plot keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.

2. Atmospheric Cinematography

Visuals play a crucial role in horror. Cinematography that utilizes lighting, shadows, and color palettes can create an unsettling atmosphere that amplifies fear. Think of iconic films like The Shining or Hereditary, where the visuals contribute significantly to the overall experience.

3. Memorable Characters

A horror movie’s impact often hinges on its characters. Are they relatable? Do the characters inspire fear? Are their fears believable? Characters that resonate with the audience make the terror feel real. From the doomed protagonists to the menacing villains, strong character development is essential. Some examples of this are cult figures like Freddy Krueger, Jason Vorhees or Mike Myers whose characters were so strong and iconic that it managed to carry entire franchises even when some of the movies were a litle substandard.

4. Effective Sound Design

Sound is an often-overlooked element that can make or break a horror film. A chilling score or soundtrack, sudden jump scares, or eerie silence can evoke fear in ways visuals cannot. Films like Friday the 13th demonstrate the power of sound in building tension iconic screeching when a knife is pulled out for a murder or the morbidly simple piano intros into “Halloween” which has been a common thread through out many of the franchises movies. Or the creepy gothic soundtracks to many of the golden era of Horror movies. All of these serve to enhance our senses enjoyment of the films we watch.

Popular Horror Movie Subgenres

1. Psychological Horror These films delve into the human psyche, exploring fears and anxieties. Titles like Get Out and Black Swan challenge viewers’ perceptions, leaving them questioning reality long after the credits roll.

2. Supernatural Horror

Ghosts, demons, and the unknown often populate these films. The Conjuring series and Insidious tap into our primal fears of what lurks beyond the grave.

3. Slasher Films

Characterized by a killer stalking and eliminating victims, slasher films like Halloween and Friday the 13th have become classics. They combine suspense with gore, creating a unique blend that horror fans adore.

4. Found Footage

This subgenre uses a documentary-style format to tell its story, making the horror feel more authentic. The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity are quintessential examples that revolutionized the genre.

I’d love to hear your opinions (even if I don’t agree with them) after all, I am just one dude. My opinion is not the be all and end all.

4. Rating the Film

I consider the rating system very subjective. I’m a human and therefore subject to my own biases and personal tastes in reviewing horror movies. One man’s 6.5 may be another mans 4.0 or it could be an 8.5 depending on who you are, the mood you were in when watching or even just your particular tastes in movies. For this reason I choose not to assign a numerical rating. I’d rather just give you my opinion and you can decide whether you watch the movie or not for yourself.
