Ok, something rather strange has happened over the last weekend. An underground and rather extreme horror film, Terrifier 3 has made its debut at the big screen around the world and would you believe its beaten out new new Joker movie that came out at the same time in the US? What makes it even more remarkable is the fact that Terrifier 3 was produced on a budget of only $2million USD. The new Joker film had star power of Lady Gaga and a budget of $200 million behind it but on its second week of release was pipped at the gate only grossing $8 or so million while Terrifier 3 grossed a massive $18 million on its opening weekend. Reports coming in say on the monday and tuesday nights following it grossed another $5 million taking it to $23 million in the US and counting. It’s important to point out that the Joker: Folie a duex did gross $35 million on its opening week, but to be beaten on the second week by a horror film such as this is still truely remarkable.
Terrifier 3 has also done similarly well in the UK and Ireland and when I went to watch it on a Sunday night here in Australia the theatre was as packed as I’d ever seen it. What makes me even more curious how this happened is that Terrifier 3 is one of the more extreme horror films ever made. It certainly wasn’t aimed at mainstream audiences and to be honest its probably on the “too extreme” list for many actual horror fans. I’m not complaining though, a movie like this gaining the response and sales that it has could mean a resurgence for the horror genre on the big screen. Either way it will interesting to see how this pans out in coming weeks. Can it actually gross more than the new joker film?
