THE WOLF MAN

I thought for this weeks horror outing It would be a chance to go waaay back in time well 1941, with that I thought I’d chuck on The Wolf Man on the old VHS player and off we go.

The film revolves around Larry who pops into an antique store and is quite taken by the shop assistant (Gwen). He claims to be psychic and gets the girls attention by describing a set of earrings the woman has at home. He buys a walking stick off her and attempts to ask her out but she’s having none of it.

In a move that would be considered quite stalkerish by today’s standards, Larry waits for her outside the shop (even though she didn’t want to go out with him) and she caves and agrees to go for a walk with Him. On that fateful mist filled night walk Larry is bitten by a wolf whilst out with Gwen. He manages to kill the wolf with his newly purchased walking cane but still sustains some heavy injuries. Thankfully, Larry is saved by a passing gypsy woman, who after delivering him to help shows up dead with her throat slit. Larry is then questioned by the authorities after the gypsy and fortune teller show up dead in the same location Larry was attacked by the wolf. Larry maintains his innocence and when showing off his injuries sustained from the wolf attack his chest seems to have miraculously healed by the next morning.

Larry goes to a fair the next night and an old gypsy tells him the wolf he killed was really a gypsy (who was also a werewolf) and advises him to wear a pentagram for protection. The old gypsy woman informs him he is now a werewolf. As the night progresses Larry grows hair in places where there was none previously and soon finds himself in full wolf-mode with murderous intentions. Can Larry and his new found wolf persona be stopped from killing off the locals? Well you’ll have to watch the film to find out!

THE VERDICT ON THE WOLF MAN

These films contain virtually no gore and the horror effects are primitive, almost laughable. But thats also the charm of these films. It’s a chance to go back in time and experience cinema from a different age when really the only thing that could carry a film was the dialogue, writing and acting. This is a well made film and once you get used to the black and white production of the film this is rather entertaining.
