EDWARD SCISSORHANDS

Time for some family horror fun! We set up the pop corn and setting into the couch and a father passes on his love for horror to his young child. It’s great to see my son picking up on this stuff and what better way to start than Edward Scissorhands?

The plot revolves around an Avon selling housewife Peg, who on her sales rounds happens upon a magnificent old house in her local and approaches the resident hoping to sell some cosmetics. The house is reminiscent of the Addams family house. Upon knocking no one answers to Peg lets her self in. Had this been a more graphic horror film this would have been the end of poor Peg, but since its a family film she is able to walk around the creepy old house in safety. The house is magnificent but is also falling into a state of disrepair. She meets a young recluse, Edward who lives in the house by himself. Edward has no hands, instead has scissors where they should be. Edward (played by Johnny Depp) claims to “Not be finished” meaning he was built by the old resident of the house who had since passed away.

Some other nice touches in this film include the cameo by Vincent Pirce as Edwards Father / Creator. It ended up being the last role he played before he sadly passed on.

Peg takes in poor Edward and soon becomes the talk of the neighbourhood. Edward of course struggles to fit in. He develops a crush on Pegs teenage daughter (played by Wynona Ryder) but the friendship struggles as is one of the popular kids in school and doesn’t really want to be seen around Edward. Edward in his attempts to fit in for the first time in his life, manages to get himself into trouble and learns a hard but valuable real world lessons in trusting others around you.

This is a superbly shot and produced film. There is nothing I can fault either director Tim Burton on with the way he has created such a magnificent universe or the actors, Depp and Ryder for their magnificent performances. This is brilliantly made film, and an even better experience to share with your young people or really anyone for that matter.
