I should say first up I’m not scared of spiders. I don’t choose to be friends with them, or go near them by choice either. I feel like if I did have an aversion to spiders, this film might worry me a bit. The film opens up with a young child (Mike) visiting a scientist / Spider enthusiast friend in his lab. Joshua the scientist grows and breeds his own spiders and has come up with a super breed of jumping arachnid. As always with these type of creature films the spider escapes and attacks its breeder which sets off an unfortunate chain of events where Joshua knocks over a heap of spider habitats setting free a mini plague of spiders to run amok through the nearby mining town.
There’s also a side issue of contamination in the local water which local cop, is investigating. The contamination leads to the spiders (who are already much larger than normal spiders) to become much bigger again, and vastly stronger, more aggressive and even hungrier than they were before. It’s now remains to be seen if the locals can survive the impending spider plague. It’s now up to the local cops (one of them being Mikes’ Mum) to see if they can stop the spider invasion. Interesting Note: The female cops daughter is played by a young Scarlett Johannson
This film is not much of a thinker, but it’s simple and fun and it actually holds your attention the whole way through this film. The film kind of sits in that B Grade / Horror comedy type vein. Regardless there are some pretty cringey scenes, like one guy early on, who inhales a bunch of spiders. I have to say it’s actually quite a well-made film and the spiders look excellent, I’m assuming they’re all CGI, though maybe the spiders featured early in the film could be real. Either way this was a fun little watch for me!
