FIRESTARTER

Well its Friday night, time to settle in with another horror movie. This time its Stephen King’s Firestarter. This is another of those movies I can’t believe I haven’t got around to watching until now.

THE PLOT OF FIRESTARTER

The movie itself opens up in some sort of hospital with some bizarre experiments going on. The experiment conducted by the government ended in disaster for most of the participants, but one couple developed strange powers, the wife could read minds and the husband could control people to do what he wants. The pair have a cute little girl (played by a very young Drew Barrymore) who has also developed the power of “pyrokinesis” the ability to set objects on fire with her mind.

Of course the government are trying to keep their experiments under control so the family was always subject to scrutiny. The young child is already showing signs of being able to control the pyrokinesis, but what happens when she grows up and her mind develops fully? How powerful will she become? The father and daughter pair head out on the run and a bunch of government operatives attempt to apprehend the pair, with disasterous consequences for the officials when young Charlene sets the officials on fire.

The pair are eventually captured and retained for questioning and studying in a government facility. Charlene and her father are separated, in order to study the childs powers. After a demonstration of her powers young Charlene escapes and attempts to track down her father. Is she able to re-unite with her Father, I guess you’ll have to watch the movie to find out where this one ends.

THE VERDICT

Again as with any Stephen King adaptation I really enjoyed Firestarter. The plot was believable the movie itself expertly shot by Dino DeLaurentiis and over all this was a really classy effort. Some great minor roles from Heather Locklear and Martin Sheen and of course Drew Barrymore shines in her role. Definitley worth anyone’s time in checking this one out.
