Scanner cop is a 1994 made continuation of the Scanners series. This one while it has some respectable levels of gore, fits into action, horror and sci-fi genres in equal parts. From the onset there’s some improved horror special effects, but there’s enough crossover in the film to keep fans of multiple genre’s happy.
The Plot of Scanner Cop
The movie opens up with a mentally ill scanner and his son. The police are called in but the scanner has powers too strong for the cops until a nearby resident comes in with a shot gun and shoots him dead on the spot. He dies however his son Sam, also has the scanning power. Now that his father is dead he is taken into the home of one of the police officers to live a normal childhood. Fast forward 15 years, and we see Sam grown up to become a police officer. Everything is looking good for Sam. Sam commences duties and of course his scanner abilities come in rather handy. His father who in the 15 years since taking the kid in has also risen to head cop and requests his son take on a copkiller case.
The plot thickens when a bunch of police officers are killed. Turns out people are suffering hallucinations triggering them to kill the police officers. This is brought on by a revenge driven ex-cult leader who is injecting people with a strange hallucinogenic drug, causing them to kill cops. Sam of course uses his powers to scan the brains and thoughts of the perpetrators of the crimes, but doing this takes an enormous mental toll on Sam. Can Sam and his advanced mental powers get to the bottom of the cases before he too looses the plot? Well, you’ll have to check out the film for youself to find out!
THE Verdict
Overall I really enjoyed Scanner Cop. Cronenberg is one of my favorite directors, so I have to say I was a bit worried about this being a pile of crap. I have to say this is a fine continuation of Cronenbergs orginal story. This one’s quite well put together. I’m not going to go as far as to say its amazing, but it is a very enjoyable watch.
