Shaun of the Dead is a movie I haven’t seen in a while but really enjoyed it when I’ve watched it (a couple of times before) in the past. It was about time I reviewed this one for the site. Shaun of the Dead, starring English comedy film duo Simon Pegg as Shaun and Nick Frost, this is a much lighter hearted take on the zombie genre. Something the genre needed I think. There is a reasonable amount of gore and guts to keep the traditionalists happy, but this is a fresh look at what at times can be a stale genre.
THE PLOT
Central character, Shaun is lovable, but his life is not exactly going the way he wanted. He’s 29 and the girlfriend is breaking up with him, because the relationship is going nowhere and he’ stuck in a dead-end retail job he doesn’t like. Shaun decides to pop down for a session down the local pub, since his girlfriend doesn’t want to go out with him and after a skin full Shaun and his best mate / flatmate stagger home blissfully unaware of a zombie outbreak going on around him. The next day, Shaun wakes up with a hangover and somehow manages to dodge the news of the outbreak until he finds a zombie in his back yard.
Its then up to Shaun to save himself, his family and girlfriend. He decides the safest place to ride out the zombie apocalypse is to seek refuge at the pub. Which as a strategic decision wasn’t a bad choice. May as well sneak a few pints in if the world is coming to an end. Can Shaun rise to the occasion and save the day? Can he win his girlfriend back? Well, that’s where you’ll have to watch the movie to find out!
Overall, I really enjoyed Shaun of the Dead. It’s probably the third or fourth time I’ve seen this film and it held up just as well on repeated viewings. There’s some good humour and good laughs in this one. The gore levels are moderate to low level for a zombie flick so it’s one of those films you can watch with younger teenagers or non-horror fans without freaking anyone out. Would definitely recommend if you haven’t already seen this one.
