First up, before we go into reviewing The Beyond, just wanted to apologise for the lack of posts on here recently. I had a messy break up and my job ended at the same time and it really knocked me around. I had to obviously focus on getting another job and making sure I can exist week to week before getting back into this blog.
Anyway, what better way to get back into it all with a movie from one of my fave directors, Lucio Fulci? Pretty much this is the best way to get back into it. I’ve been after this movie for a few years now, and only recently found a copy and bought it a couple of months ago, but with the turmoil in my life didn’t get a chance to watch it. The movie itself opens up with a sepia flash back of a woman reading from an ancient tome, recounting times of witch huntings in the semi-distant past. Straight of the bat the gore is fairly respectable. That coupled with the pedigree of the director, you know this is going to be a decent ride.
THE PLOT
As a movie The Beyond really starts when it fasts forward to the present day (well the present day of 1981) to the new occupiers of a house. As per any good horror movie the house does need a little work and the nice young lady who had taken possession of the house gets a handy man in to start sorting it all out. It’s of course not long before he heads into the cellar and is brutally killed by a long entombed zombie. Whilst all this is happening the owner goes out for a drive and meets the lady (Emily) reading from the book in the first sequence. She brings warnings of the evil that surrounds the house.
Emily goes on to explain that the house was built over a gateway to hell. Does Liza heed the warning of the mysterious woman? Of course not. Does she survive the mayhem, blood, guts and gore that follow? Well you’ll have to watch the film to find out. Rest assurred it’s a great ride though!
THE VERDICT
I really enjoyed The Beyond and it was a captivating watch from start to finish. The gore content was excellent and would have been on the more extreme end of horror for its time. All I can really say is do yourself a favour and watch this one if you get a chance.
