THE FLY

It had been a fair few years (Even before I started writing this blog) since I’d last viewed The Fly, but it was well overdue for another viewing. And I’m glad I did, this is one excellent movie. Directed by body horror extroidiniare David Cronenberg, and starring the well cute Geena Davis and the awesome Jeff Goldblum this is definitely on the must see list for any self respecting horror fan.

THE PLOT OF THE FLY

The movie starts off with Inventor, Seth Brundle (Goldblum) trying to spruik his wares as the inventor of something that could change the world. He manages to get a pretty journalist, Ronnie (Geena Davis) back to his home lab to check out his teleportation device. He impresses her by teleporting a stocking from one teleportation pod to the other one and inspires the journalist to start working on an article for the magazine she works for. A bond between the two starts to grow and if course they get intimate. The editor of the magazine (her ex of course) doesn’t want to run the article as he doens’t believe teleportation can really happen.

The main problem with the teleportation device is that it can’t teleport organic substances. Only inanimate objects. His initial attempts at transporting a baboon and a steak were basically disasterous but Seth fine tunes the equipment and believes he can now teleport organic substances. For the first experiment he decides to transport himself with mixed result as a fly gets in the machine and the teleportation device transports them both as one being and fuses their organics together making Seth part human part fly, with some rather gross and horrific consequences.

Can Seth return to a normal human form? Well that’s where you’ll have to watch the movie. But rest assured you’ll have a sickeningly fun ride in finding out!

THE VERDICT

Overall, I really liked The Fly. It’s probably the fourth time I’ve seen this since being a kid. This time I got a lot more out of it analysing Cronenberg’s mastery of horror and gore. This is almost masterpeice level horror but if you don’t want to think too much the gore and plot are simple to follow and almost impossible to look away from. This succeeds on every level possible and all i can do is wholeheartedly recommend you guys get this film and check it out.
