VHS is an interesting release. It relies on a filming technique known as ‘found footage’ most notably pioneered in the movie Cannibal Holocaust. The major difference being this whole movie seems to consist of the technique. The technique does add an air of creepyness to the proceedings but can also make things appear disjointed if you’re not paying close attention. This is also a great way to enter the field of horror movies as the production itself could have been done on a shoe string. The results however were rather cool!
VHS basically contains 6 short horror stories, combined into one package through a central thread. (on a DVD ironically) The Story follows the exploits of a bunch of idiot young men who make money out of filming others in compromising positions and reselling the footage to porn sites. Despite the fact I find this kind of behaviour reprehensible, I found myself drawn right into the movie. Anyway the gang get paid a lot of money to retrieve one particular tape from a house. what happens next is the sequence of six short stories that get woven into this thread. Some horrifying and thought provoking but all immensely watchable.
The stories are all cool and suitably horrific. Collated by the team at Bloody Disgusting (Another well known horror site) it was always to going to be fairly full on stuff. Again not really intented for the newcomer to horror flicks with the gore levels contained in some of these stories. I had a great time watching this one. If you’re into this kind of stuff, I can fully recommend you check it out too!
