Arachnid is a movie I’d never heard of before, but found on VHS in my storage area. Upon reading the back of the package it turns out to be produced by Brian Yuzna’s production group. Intrigue built so I had to put it ye olde VHS Player and give it a watch.
The movie opens up with a fighter pilot flying over the pacific ocean when he comes arcoss something strange on his guidance systems. Turns out it’s a small alien craft off some description and the pilot flies right into it destroying both his plane and the alien craft. The pilot manages to parachute back to any island where he comes face to face wth the alien pilot of the craft he destroyed. The alien is then killed by a giant arachnid. Its not clear if the spider like creature was on board the alien ship or an unusually large Earth spider.
The pilots sister takes over and charters a expedition out to the island. There’s the usual sorts, a couple of tough guys, and scientist a doctor etc. Turns out the island is full of bugs. Many of them rather venomous. Bit by bit the expedition is take out by strange (and rather gory) infections and sicknesses.
Bit by bit things get worse until our crew is face to face with the huge spider. I won’t spoil what happens beyond that but it’s a definitely a wild ride for our heroes.
This film doesn’t feature any known actors (at least not known to mainstream audiences) and the director is pretty much unknown too. But have to say this is a pretty decent film and the creature effects are better than decent. I had a pretty good time watching this and definitely feel that while it wasn’t a movie of the year contender by any stretch it was definitely 1.5 hours well spent watching it.
