COUNT DRACULA AND HIS VAMPIRE BRIDE

I’ve always been a big fan of Hammer films. They are elegant have great actors and display a sense of British pompousness I could never understand because I am a loud mouthed beer drinking Australian, but I’ve always admired these films and the British pomp that they portray. I’ve always found Hammer films to be well made. This one I have to say really missed the mark a little. I watched it once and couldn’t focus on it. I should also say I came across this film in 10 dvd set I bought for like $10 which had 50 movies on it. I didn’t go into this with great expectations either.

This movie had Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing but still somehow managed to be rather bland. The filmed opened up with a really cute naked chick being sacrificed on a satanic altar. Naked chicks and satanism are two of my favourite things but despite the great start this film just did not seem to go anywhere. It watched more like an English crime drama than a horror movie.

Anyway after the first failed viewing I put it on again. There was still some stuff that didn’t make sense. I feel like the plot revolved around Dracula (who didn’t appear much until much later in the film) who’d been kicking around England for a few hundred years and formed a company and was making a legitimate income whilst of course killing and converting his victims into vampires on the side. I guess with being immortal and all, it was only a matter of time until Dracula entered the corporate world. Van Helsing (Cushing) looks into it and goes off to track down Dracula.

I don’t know what to say. It is a tale of squandered potential. This feels like a made for TV movie but either way doesn’t come up to the usual standard of Hammer films for entertainment value. I started the movie 3 times before I was able to mentally lock in and watch it till the end.
