GALAXY OF TERROR

Galaxy of Terror is a 1980 Science Fiction movie, it comes as a bit of a cash in on the Star Wars / Alien wave of popularity at the time but obviously on a much smaller budget. The film however is easy to watch and from the outset provides a creepy atmosphere and there is a definite sense of tension. The film has smaller role appearances from Robert Englund and Sid Haug as well.

Plot wise this follows a group of crew on a space ship who are on a mission to recover a previously lost spaceship. They find one of their crew killed by a strange life form on board the ship. The crew end up finding the ship on a near by planet but there’s something nasty still on board the ship. This is where I have to say the plot got a bit disjointed as Im not sure if it was a bunch of space aliens or some sort of entity that can take on different forms. I a bit of research indicated that it was an entity that reflected its victims psychological fears (I didn’t get that by watching the film) but if they’d developed that aspect of the story a little more thoroughly this could have been a really cool film. Either way it starts to take out the crew one by one as they try to solve the mystery of what actaully happened aboard the ship.

The film is Pretty cool for what it is, it was a decent way to spend a quiet Sunday afternoon. I enjoyed watching it but at this point its not what I’d call essential viewing. The gore factor is pretty cool. and there’s some quite creative killings. Apparently this film got an X rating for the gore content but these days I don’t think it would come in above an M rating.
