Repossessed is a comedy spoof on the highly revered movie THE EXORCIST. I had seen this before in the 90’s but couldn’t remember too much of it. The movie itself was made in 1990, 17 years after the original Exorcist film but one good selling point with the film is that the original star of the Exorcist, Linda Blair returned to reprise her role in this comedy spoof. With Leslie Neilsen taking the lead though you know where this film is going!
The movie picks up where the last one finished off with Father Mayi recapping his previous encounter with the devil that inhabited Reagan’s body (Note: she is called Nancy in this film) to a university lecture. From the start there are some pretty base grade but rather funny pun’s and visual gags. Anyway after the recap the movie switches to the present day (1990) where Nancy is now married and the mother of two children but still having recurring nightmares of the incident. Things get a bit more serious when Nancy begins to show the signs of Demonic possession again.
Nancy is assessed by a young priest who then recruits Father Mayi to come out of retirement to battle the Devil once again in this all star rematch to be broadcast live on TV on a popular televangelist’s show. Anyway as you could imagine Father Mayi and the devil do battle over the body of Nancy in a record breaking global TV audience. I won’t tell you who won, I’ll save that fun for your viewing!
The film is not an intellectual experience. You have to be in the mood for a bit of silliness to watch this. The jokes are similar to the puns you would find in the “Scary Movie” franchise but I would say this is a little less base grade and the humour is better. Major points for getting Linda Blair back and there’s some cool ‘fun poking’ at the state of modern religion (Well, modern religion as it was back then). Over all definitley worth a watch once, but don’t expect any scares haha!
