As with most of these creature type films, and also most ROGER CORMAN films you don’t go into these things with huge expectations. Corman has produced some great movies and some stinkers. Upon inspecting the DVD cover there would appear to be no known actors either. But hey let’s give it the benefit of the doubt.
The movie opens up with the sighting of the strange half shark half octopus creature being sighted around the shoreline and a bunch of scientist / navy types monitoring it’s progress. The self destruct device strapped to the creature indicates it was man made. Of course the creature manages to shake loose the device and is now free to prey upon any humans near enough the water for its tentacles to reach.
Can the navy scientists reign in their creation? Can you sit through this one long enough to find out? Thats the real question.
The Verdict
Without giving the film plot away this is very pedestrian in terms of acting and computer generated effects. The gore is pretty light on and there’s no nudity (despite the potential of a movie set at the beach) so there’s really nothing else except the actual story keeping you watching this film. As far as watchability goes, it’s alright but I feel it falls below the standard of Corman films I’ve seen before as well. The graphics are obviously computer generated, so much so that it does become a bit of a distraction. Couldn’t they have at least used a real Sharktopus? In all seriousness the movie does come across as a little on the “cheap” side. The movie itself, I have to say is a little lack lustre. In all honesty unless you see this going really cheap or are a fan of these films for some reason, I’d suggest you’re better off spending your heard earned money or free time on something else.
