THE EXORCIST 3

The Exorcist was one of the greatest horror movies ever, if not the greatest. It built a legacy that that cannot be denied. Part 2 rolled around and while it wasn’t the worst movie ever it sucked by comparison to the first. Now after many years I’d finally tracked down a copy of the third instalment of the series. It was with fingers crossed (and maybe crosses fingered) that i put this one in the old VHS machine.

THE PLOT

The Exorcist 3 returns to the scene (or at least the locality) of the first movie. Set 15 years after the original this one harkens back to the feel of the original a little. Another welcome connection to the first film is the original investigator, Kinderman, from the Exorcist returning as the central character. Kinderman is an interesting character and the dialogue is excellent. Horror aside the dialogue makes. you think. So far we’re off to a pretty good start.

The film is set against the back drop of serial killings in New York city. Oddly enough its The Gemini killer (I’d since found out that the Gemini killer was influenced by the first Exorcist movie so this gives the film a sense of eerie realness). I have to say the movie started out rather slow, not bad, but slow. More like some sort of drama / cop movie. Amidst the murders (and one particularly horrid murder of a child) Kinderman has lost his faith in the good lord.

Kinderman then comes across a man claiming to be the Gemini Killer in a psychiatric ward. This my friends is where I have to stop giving away the plot, for fear of ruining the movie for you. Let’s just say there’s a killer plot twist that will really lift this movie out of mediocrity and into the realm of being quite entertaining.

The verdict on the Exorcist 3

Overall, The Exorcist 3 is a well shot movie. The plot is quite good and it’s interesting enough to keep your attention the whole way through. There’s some interesting dream like sequences too in this. I’m going to say I can’t help feel that the movie was a bit of a let down compared to the original legendary effort though. That being said, I’m glad I got to watch to watch it. Otherwise I would have died wondering what the film was like. If nothing else at least now I know. Over all I’d recommend watching this, its good but not great, so don’t pay too much for it.
